Hairy Thicktailed Scorpion (P. villosus)

Unique 1/1
  • Hairy Thicktailed Scorpion (P. villosus)
  • The Hairy Thicktailed Scorpion (Parabuthus villosus) is one of Southern Africa's few day-active scorpion species, and ranges from the northern parts of South Africa along the western side of Namibia.

It is one of the largest scorpions of the Parabuthus genus, being around 18 cm in length with the tail extended. In South Africa they are usually dark brown or black, but up into Namibia they can have yellow legs. This species has prominent hairs on the tail and body that are usually lighter brown.

The sting of this species causes extreme pain and should be treated in a hospital. Antivenom is not effective.
