The embattled Monet suffered poor health and grief due to the loss of his second wife Alice Hoschedé in this late career, and arguably, most popular series. Monet resumed his painting with conviction, producing a series of almost 300 water lily themed paintings, a number of which were large format panoramas. In June 2014, one of the Water Lilies, Nymphéas, sold for $54 million USD at auction in London. The aspect ratio of the painting has been preserved to display the work in its entirety.
