Claude Monet produced 25 paintings in the haystacks series depicting stacks of wheat (not hay, contrary to the title) towering up to 15-20 feet outside the artists farmhouse in Giverney. Fifteen paintings were exhibited by Durand-Ruel in May 1891 to great success, the collection selling out within a month. In May of 1998, Monet's 1890 masterpiece titled Meules broke records as the highest selling impressionist piece at $110.7 million USD during an 8 minute auction. The painting was bought by the seller for $2.53 million in 1986. The piece is signed "Claude Monet 91" toward the bottom right. The aspect ratio of the painting has been preserved to display the work in its entirety. Image courtesy of The Art Institute of Chicago.
